HOBBY STOCK RULES 2006-2011

 

**Rule Correction**  Stamped Steel Roller Tips under $100 allowed”

1. INTRODUCTION

A. NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OR SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATIONS OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS.

B. It is the responsibility of the driver of the car to see that his/her car completely satisfies the rules, including but not limited to all safety rules. The driver of each car represents to the promoter and all others that his/her car has satisfied all applicable rules, including but not limited to safety rules, whenever such driver participates in warm-up, practice or competitive laps.

2. INTENT

A. The Hobby Stock division is a highly competitive class where competitors, novice to veteran, can hone their skills as a driver and/or builder. Minimal contact can be expected, but is not a trademark of this class.

3. COMPETING MODELS

1) Competing models shall be limited to 1960 to 1990 American and Canadian, rear wheel drive passenger car or short box pickups only.
2) MINIMUM WHEEL BASE OF 108”
3) Camero, Firebird, Cougar, Mustang, Barracuda, Challenger, Javelin, and any other Pony cars are not allowed

4. GENERAL CAR AND BODY REQUIREMENTS

A. General Car:

1)  All cars will be kept neat and clean in appearance with no sharp edges or loose body parts.
2) CHASSIS AND ENGINE shall remain stock as produced unless otherwise stated.
3) BODY shall have all body parts to race. Specifically, hood, roof, trunk lid, all doors, fenders, quarter panels, and shall be steel components.
a) Plastic nose and tales shall be allowed.
4) All breakable items must be removed. That is the outer body trim, door handles, hood ornaments, and glass or plastic lenses.
5) Clear underside of the car of excessive bolts and brackets.
6) Remove all flammable material.

B. Floorboards:

1) Floorboards shall remain intact from firewall to rear differential frame kick up.
2) Removal of trunk floorboard shall be allowed.

C. Interiors:

1) Inner body panels, door jams and dash may be removed.

D. Overall Car Weight:

1) Total weight with driver must be at least 3150 lbs.

E. Added Car Weight:

1) Left side bias not to exceed 54% of total weight.
2) Rear weight bias not to exceed 48% of total weight.
3) All weight must be secured.

1. DETAILED CAR BODY REQUIREMENTS

A. Front Air Dam and Nose:

1) Plastic nose shall be allowed.

B. Rear Spoilers:

1) Plastic tales shall be allowed.

C. Windshields:

1) WINDSHIELD is mandatory. Entire opening must be covered. OEM safety glass, lexan, or tempered plexiglass acceptable. Straps must be bolted, no pop rivets or screws.

D. Rear Window:

1) Rear Window is optional.

E. Side Windows, Quarter Windows, Air Deflectors and Net:

1) Window Nets shall be fastened to the roll cage. No pop rivets.
2) Quarter Windows and Air Deflectors shall be allowed.
3) Side Windows shall not be allowed.

F. Rear View Mirror:

1) No mirrors allowed.

G. Firewalls:

1) Any holes shall be covered with a minimum 22 gauge sheet metal.
2) Messaging of firewall for distributor clearance shall be allowed.

H. Doors:

1) ALL DOORS must be welded, bolted or riveted.

I. Fenders:

1) Front inner fenders may be removed.
2) If the rear inner wheel wells and trunk floor are removed, the car shall be tinned off so that no debris can injure the driver.

J. Quarter and Rocker Panels:

1) Rocker panel boxes are to remain unaltered.
2) Removal of the inside rear quarter panels shall be allowed.

K. Grilles:

1) Grill shall be securely fastened so it will not fall out during a crash.

L. Hood:

1) Hood shall have the inner panel removed.

M. Roof:

1) Roof shall be fastened in stock position.

N. Rear Deck Lids:

1) Rear deck shall be securely fastened so not to injure driver during a crash.
2) Removal of inner panel shall be allowed.

O. Bumpers and Rear Filler Panel:

1) Front and rear bumpers are required.
2) BUMPERS may be reinforced within original confines of stock bumper. Radiator protection permitted between grill and radiator; bracing must end ahead of A-Frame.
3) Bumper ends must be strapped, capped, or rolled to reduce cut tires and locking with other cars. Suggested straps be a min. 1/8" X 3" material, welded or bolted with carriage bolts, no pop rivets.

2. GENERAL ENGINE REQUIREMENTS

1) ENGINE must be manufacture to manufacture (Example, corporate GM to corporate GM, Ford to Mercury).

3. DETAILED ENGINE REQUIREMENTS

A. Engine Location:

1) Forward most spark plug shall not be set back from centerline of the upper ball joint.
2) Altering firewall shall be allowed for distributor clearance.

B. Engine Ground Clearance:

1) Engine ground clearance shall not be lower then the stock clearance.

C. Engine Mounts:

1) Mounts may be reinforced or chained.
2) No torque plates are permitted

D. Engine Displacement:

1) 360 cubic inch displacement limit.
a) Mopar 360 may have a maximum +.040” overbore.
2) No "stroking" to increase cubic inches.

E. Engine Block:

1) Engine Block shall be stock as produced by the OEM.

F. Internal Changes:

1) CRANK: Machine work to lighten crank shall not be allowed.
2) Double roller timing chain and gear drive optional. Belt drives shall not be permitted.

G. Piston/Rods:

1) Flat top piston with valve relief’s only. Metric or SAE
2) CONNECTING RODS: Stock Steel, OEM, GM to GM. Or Ford to Mercury, Dodge to Plymouth etc.

H. Oil Pans and Coolers:

1) Engine accessories shall be stock except for increasing the capacity of the oil sump.
2) No oil coolers shall be permitted.

I. Cylinder Heads:

1) Stock OEM cast iron production heads only. Heads must be manufactured by GM, Ford, or Chrysler.
2) Manufacturer’s identifications and part numbers must remain on the part being used with no alteration. Any attempt to alter, change, or eliminate part numbers will result in that part being ineligible to race.
3) Heads are limited to (2) valves per cylinder.
4) All valves must be identical in appearance and construction as an OEM or replacement type.
5) The maximum of a three (3) angle valve job is permitted. When cutting the valve seat angles, no stone, cutter, or grinding marks are permitted above the bottom of the valve guide. All cutting in reference to the valve job must be centered from the centerline of the valve guide. Upon completion of the valve job, the bowl area under the valve seat down to the bottom of the valve guide must still be the same configuration as far as shape and finish as it was from the manufacturer. Surfaces and/or edges where the stone or cutter has touched must not be polished, smoothed, or radiused.
6) No hand or CNC grinding, milling or polishing is permitted on any part of the head other than mentioned in stated rules.
7) Performance cylinder heads such as, but not limited to, square port, Dart, Edelbrock, and limited production cylinder heads are NOT permitted. Heads must have been produced in sufficient numbers to allow each competitor an opportunity to purchase the head at a reasonable cost.
8) Ford Austrailian or N Series, Chevy Vortec, Mopar W2 or X heads are not allowed.
9) Screw-in or pinned studs and push rod guide plates shall be allowed.
10) No stud girdles.
11) Chevrolet only allowed 1.5 rockers. Mopar and Ford adjustable rockers are allowed. No roller rockers or roller tipped.

13) Port matching, flow work or acid porting is not permitted.
14) Internal polishing, porting, removal of metal, and/or any other kind of modification will not be permitted.
15) External changes of any kind not covered within these rules are not permitted.

J. Camshaft, Valve Lifters, and Rocker Arms:

1) Any hydraulic cams up to .500 inch. No mechanical lifters, solid lifters or mushroom lifters.
2) Hydraulic cam and hydraulic lifters only.
3) Flat tappet cams only.

K. Intake Manifold:

1) Stock cast iron two barrel intake manifolds only.

L. Carburetor:

1) Carburetor must be 500 cfm Holly, list 4412. Nothing else allowed. Carb may have choke butterfly removed.
2) Carb adapter of 1 5/8" maximum height allowed, including gaskets.

M. Air Intake: (air filter):

1) Air cleaner/filters are mandatory.

4. ENGINE/CAR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

A. Ignition System:

1) Run any single pickup electronic. No magnetos.

B. Alternator:

1) Alternators are optional.

C. Starter:

1) The starter shall able to start the engine before the first race.

D. Battery:

1) One 12 volt battery only
2) Battery may be any standard passenger car, twelve volt battery only.
3) Battery shall be mounted in the passenger compartment behind the driver, six inches from exterior sheet metal.
4) Battery shall be enclosed in a covered box or shielded from the driver and fastened securely. Plumbers tape shall not be allowed

E. Electrical Switches and Locations:

1) A labeled ON-OFF switch shall be located on the roll bar behind the driver’s seat. The switch must be wired to the battery in a manner that will cut off all electrical power to the car.

F. Radios:

1) Radio shall not be allowed.

5. ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM

A. General Cooling System:

1) No antifreeze.
2) Transmission coolers may be used, but must be mounted in a fashion so as not to injure the driver in the event of failure or fire.

B. Water Pump:

C. Fan:

1) Electric fans OK

D. Radiator:

1) Any single radiator may be used, no auxiliary cores.
2) Radiator shall be mounted ahead of engine.

E. Overflow:

1) Radiator overflow shall be connected to catch tank with a minimum of (1) one quart capacity.

6. ENGINE LUBRICATION Oil

A. Oil Filter:

1) Oil Filter shall be mounted in stock location.

B. Oiling System:

1) Oil coolers shall not be allowed.
2) No synthetic crankcase lubricants. ($50 fine imposed if confirmed).

7. ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM

A. Exhaust Manifold:

1) Stock cast iron manifold exhaust port not to exceed 2 1/2". 1-5/8” primary tube headers only shall be permitted. $100 Claimer Prize. No tuned or equal length tubes, no ceramic coated headers, open to inspection at any time. Header tape is allowed for heat shielding only.

B. Exhaust Pipes:

1) Exhaust must extend and exit behind driver.

C. Mufflers:

1) Mufflers are mandatory and shall not exceed 92 decibels.
2) Noise dB is set at 92 recorded behind flag stand at bottom bleacher.

8. DRIVE TRAIN

A. Clutch:

1) Clutch cover diameter to match flywheel "as produced". Stock fiber clutch only, no puck style.

B. Flywheel:

1) Only stock flywheels permitted. 20 lb minimum weight limit. No aluminum.

C. Transmission:

1) Torque converters must be stock and full size. No direct drive or lockups.
2) No synthetic lubricants.

D. Drive Shaft:

1) Driveline must be painted white for visibility.
2) Driveline straps or chain loop is required.
3) Should be located within twelve inches behind front universal.
4) Should be heavy enough to contain loose drive line. Advise minimum of 3/16" x 1" strap, attached with washers and bolts. No cables.

E. Rear Axle:

1) Rear end housing can be any make rear end. Differentials shall have zero chamber, stock toe and all adjustments welded.
2) Differential may be locked by welding or blocked spiders, or mini-spools. No full spools allowed.
3) OEM Posi or Limited Slip differential may be used.

F. Wheels and Lug Bolts:

1) Steel wheels only, maximum width 8 inches.
2) 3 inch minimum backspace measured from inner edge of rim to mounting flange.
3) Right side wheels must be reinforced or double centered, suggest racing wheels (Bart, Clement, Diamond) on right side.
4) 1/2" stud minimum, suggest 5/8" on all comers.
5) White spoke centers must have 360 degree contact with rim.

G. Tires:

1) MVS Track approved tire, purchased at MVS. No tire pressure reliefs.

9. FRAME REQUIREMENTS

1) FRAME must match body, make to make, model to model, year to year.
2) Bodies must mount in stock position.
3) No altering of frame for suspension travel. No shortening, lengthening, or lowering is permitted.
4) Models with bolt-on sub-frames may use connectors, but must run parallel to wheelbase. 'X' bracing in floor shall not be permitted.

10. SUSPENSION

A. General Suspension:

1) No altering of any suspension parts to improve geometry. All mounting and pick-up points to remain stock Exception:

B. Front Suspensions:

1) Front clips to be make to make, model to model no Camaro front clips.
2) Metric cars may run Nova spindles and rotors.
3) Elongating of holes or drilling within one inch of stock mounting shall be permitted on right front only.
4) Any bushing material allowed on front.

C. Front Coil Springs:

1) May use any springs when located in stock position.

D. Rear Suspensions:

1) Any bushing shall be allowed on the rear,

E. Sway Bars (Anti-Roll Bar):

1) Sway bars must be stock in front and rear and mounted in original mounting holes.

F. Track Bar:

1) Track bar shall be permitted if available on car and shall be mounted in position only.

G. Shock Absorbers:

1) Shocks may be gas or hydraulic, must be mounted in OE fashion, no tie-rod ends, no bearing ends. no air bags, no air shocks, and no coil-overs.
2) Shock mounts may be extended along the original axis to allow use of long body shock.

H. Wheelbase Requirements:

1) MINIMUM WHEEL BASE OF 108”

I. Ground Clearance Requirements:

1) Car must have minimum ground clearance of 5" when on level ground, measured at the lowest part of the frame and appear to set level.

J. Car Height Adjusting Devices:

1) Spring spacers on coil springs shall be permitted if mounted in a permanent fashion so as not to be dislodged in a crash.
2) No "screw-in" twist-in type blocks. Horseshoe type permissible.
3) Lowering blocks shall be allowed on rear leaf spring cars.
4) Adjustable spacers on all four corners on rear coil spring cars shall be permitted as long as they remain in stock position.
5) Leaf cars may run adjustable shackles. Mopar: Front or Rear not both.

11. BRAKES AND COOLING COMPONENTS

A. Brake Components:

1)  Brakes must be operable on all 4 wheels. No adjustable proportioning valves. Front brakes can be disc or drum. Rear brakes drum only

B. Brake Cooling:

1) Drilling of front rotors shall be allowed.

12. FUEL

1) Approved fuels will include aviation gas, racing gasoline, and standard pump gasoline. No alcohol, nitro, or nitrous-oxide

13. FUEL SYSTEM

A. Fuel Cell:

1) Capacity may not exceed (12) twelve gallons

B. Fuel Cell Container:

1) Racing approved fuel cell with steel cover is mandatory.

C. Fuel Cell and Fuel Container Installation:

1) Fuel Cell shall be mounted in the center of trunk (side to side) and behind rear end.
2) Recommend installing a ground wire to frame.
3) Bottom of fuel cell may be no lower than bottom of trunk frame rails.
a) Models with recessed trunk floors must meet this requirement
4) A ground strap from filler neck to frame shall be in place.
5) Minimum mounting will be 3 straps (two parallel and one crossing 90 degrees to them). No plumbers tape, no chains. NOTE: Two straps may be used if cell is contained at base so as not to shift on impact of crash.

D. Fuel Lines:

1) Only metal fuel line allowed. No more than 12 inches of rubber hose between fuel cell and fuel pump. Fuel lines must run under the car and be securely fastened to frame or floor pan. Grommets or equivalent required where passing through trunk.

E. Fuel Pump:

1) Mechanical fuel pumps only. No electric fuel pumps.

F. Fuel Filter:

1) Fuel filter is optional.

G. Fuel Filler Cans:

1) Fuel filter cans shall not be steel.

14. PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND ROLL BARS

A. Fire Control:

1) Fire shield constructed of minimum 22 gauge steel to completely separate driver from fuel cell is mandatory.

B. Helmets; Head and Neck Restraint Devices: (See general rules).

C. Seat Belts: (See general rules).

D. Seats:

1) RACING APPROVED SEATS ONLY. Aluminum seat constructed of minimum .095" material. No fiberglass. Seat Mounts: Must be connected to roll cage only. One piece aluminum seat mandatory

E. Roll Bars:

1) ROLL CAGE is to be constructed of 1 5/8" OD or larger, black pipe or tubing, minimum wall thickness of .120" is required. Carbon mechanical tubing of 1 3/4" OD with .095" wall thickness is also allowed.
2) MINIMUM CAGE required shall be of six point perimeter of 3/4 offset design. Main hoop should be placed near enough to driver seat to allow attachment of seat back and support for shoulder harness. Driver should sit in relatively stock position to wheel base. Brake pedal may be moved or extended.
3) MAIN HOOP is defined as a bar attached on left frame rail (Rocker box) behind the driver extending upwards to the roof, a similar bar on right, a bar across the roof connecting these uprights, and a full modified 'X' contained in it's perimeter. Modified allows one leg to be placed horizontal for attachment of seat back.
4) WINDSHIELD HOOP is defined as a bar attached to the left frame rail (Rocker box) ahead of driver, extending upwards to the roof, a similar bar on right, a bar across the roof connecting these uprights, and a dash bar connecting the uprights at a height not to promote injury to driver in a crash.
5) TOP HALO. Add a bar connecting the two lift uprights above drivers head, a similar bar on the right to complete the rectangle in the roof. A bar bisecting the top halo shall run diagonal or parallel to wheelbase.
6) COMPLETE the six point cage with a bar from left main hoop upright (suggest top) to corresponding frame rail at rear axle centerline, a similar bar on right. These may be incorporated into the rear hoop, but must not extend behind axle centerline.
7) RIGHT SIDE DOOR must have a minimum of two bars parallel to frame at least 16" above frame connecting cage uprights.
8) LEFT SIDE DOOR must have three bars parallel to frame, spaced between window and frame rail. Tie parallel bars together vertically. 14 gauge aluminum or steel must be used if cage is not tight against door skin.
9) GUSSETS are required at all frame points, door bars and all joints above drivers chest. Minimum weld surface 1 1/2" each leg. Stamped gussets okay.
10) REAR HOOP is mandatory and is to be constructed with tubing or pipe. No angle iron.
11) Horizontals may connect to main cage or rear brace bars and must extend behind the fuel cell location.
12) May be attached to frame or floor pan at only four points behind axle centerline. All bracing must run parallel or perpendicular to wheelbase.
13) All other bracing must be contained inside perimeter of 4 cage uprights. Wedge bars (diagonals from main “X” to frame rails) must terminate before frame rail kick-up.
14) FRONT HOOPS are mandatory. 8 point max.

F. Transmission/Clutch Shielding

1) Scatter shield or containment method shall be used on all cars. Reinforced belt material is acceptable and shall be placed under floor. It should be attached with large diameter washers or reinforced strips. No mud flaps. 1” inspection hole on bottom of bell housing.
2) Automatic cars with belting should have entire transmission line covered. Shield should extend from firewall to transmission extension housing.

G. Steering wheel

1) A steel quick release steering wheel is mandatory.
2) Center of steering wheel hub shall be padded and acceptable to Tech Officials.

DRIVERS, CAR OWNERS AND PITMEN IN THIS CLASS SHALL OBSERVE ALL THE MISSION VALLEY AUTO RACERS GENERAL RULES.

If it doesn’t say YOU CAN,  YOU CAN”T!

 

RULES TO BE CHANGED MUST HAVE A 70% MAJORITY VOTE OF THE CLASS DRIVERS OR OWNERS THAT PARTICIPATED IN TWO OR MORE RACES AND 70% MAJORITY VOTE OF BOARD MEMBERS. If car owner or driver can’t be contacted or is contacted and doesn’t reply back to the class representative, the vote for the car would be a NO vote. Any rule changes not voted on by driver or owner will be a NO vote.

ONLY in the interest of SAFETY, COST and/or FAIR COMPETITION can 70% of the board of directors make a rule change if the class representative can’t get 70% of the votes from the class drivers or owners.
